When a band calls themselves a “time-travelling, hip-shaking, psychedelic rock-n-roll trio, specializing in organic earworms and lyrical hash,” you’d better believe that they deliver and then some. Brought to us in the form of a generous 15-track album, this collection honours the nuances of rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and alt-rock.
There is something seriously gravitational and therapeutic about ‘Move’. It’s the type of music that you hear while walking past a performance venue, captivating you and rendering you unable to leave until it’s over. It can be felt that members: Tommy Whiteside, Matthew Campbell and Kristi Rifenbark have left part of their heart and soul in each track. Whether through breathy, gritty spoken words or growling vocal textures in ‘Trash King’ -from start to finish there is nothing formulaic or unoriginal about their craft.
Call and response between Tommy and Matthew’s rock and jazz vocals is a common technique throughout the album, which is also laden with heavy guitar riffs. Syncopated basslines give some songs an energetic pulsating heartbeat, while ‘Take Me’ has a seductive, languorous feel to it. ‘Too Hard To Love’ is grungy and bursting with distorted power chords. Kristi’s delivery of the line ‘please feed my disease’ is nothing short of iconic.
